Genova Burns Newly Promoted Counsel Jaclynn N. McDonnell Launches “Read Across Newark” Initiative to Support Local Students

Turning pages into Possibilities

February 24, 2026

Newly promoted Counsel Jaclynn N. McDonnell has launched a new community initiative, Read Across Newark: Turning Pages Into Possibilities, inspired by her recent volunteer experience packing Thanksgiving meal bags for students at Speedway Avenue School in Newark.

While volunteering alongside colleagues from Genova Burns, McDonnell was struck by the dedication of staff members Principal AshleyJiles and Ms. Lott, as well as the school’s innovative literacy program, which features book vending machines in the lobby. Students earn special coins to “purchase” books as rewards for academic achievement, positive behavior, and strong attendance.

“Seeing how excited the students were to earn books of their own was incredibly moving,” said McDonnell. “It reminded me that access to reading isn’t just educational — it’s empowering.”

What makes Read Across Newark especially meaningful is its focus on student choice. Rather than distributing random titles, the initiative supports the school’s curated wish list, allowing students to select books that genuinely interest them. Research — and real-world experience — show that when students can read what excites them, it sparks joy, increases reading time, and strengthens comprehension. Sometimes, a reluctant or struggling reader simply needs to discover the right author or series to unlock a lifelong love of reading.

“Our students are truly excited about being able to select their own books,” said Bonnie Berlin, ELA Coach at the Speedway Avenue School. “Access to books changes everything for our students. Jaclynn’s enthusiasm and Genova Burns’ commitment and generosity will bring new excitement to reading, and we are deeply grateful for her partnership and support.”

Motivated by the visit, McDonnell coordinated with school staff to obtain a curated list of requested titles and launched a donation drive to help expand students’ access to books. Supporters can contribute by purchasing books directly from the school’s Amazon wishlist or by donating $25 gift cards to Barnes & Noble. The lists are available via the QR code  above or here

The initiative adds to an already milestone year for McDonnell. In addition to her promotion to Counsel, she was recently recognized as a Leader in Law by NJBIZ and began filming her bankruptcy-focused podcast, This IS Fixable, all while spearheading this new charitable effort.

“Jaclynn exemplifies the kind of leadership we value — not only professional excellence, but a genuine commitment to lifting up the communities around us. Her Read Across Newark initiative reflects the heart of our firm’s culture,” said Jennifer Borek, Managing Partner of Genova Burns.

“Access to books changes everything for our students. Jaclynn’s enthusiasm and Genova Burns’ commitment and generosity will bring new excitement to reading, and we are deeply grateful for her partnership and support, said Sherice Lott, Attendance Counselor, Speedway Academy. Through Read Across Newark, McDonnell hopes to continue building momentum and community support. “Books open doors,” she added. “If we can help put more stories into students’ hands, we can help expand what they believe is possible.”

At Genova Burns, community engagement is more than a value — it is a practice. The firm proudly supports initiatives that strengthen local communities, expand access to education, and empower future generations. From hands-on volunteer efforts to firm-wide giving campaigns, Genova Burns strives to make a lasting difference both inside and outside the courtroom.
