Angelo Genova Co-Authored Op-Ed on Improving Air Traffic Technology for Star-Ledger

Founding Partner Angelo Genova co-authored an opinion article with Joseph Smitt for the Star-Ledger, which was published January 20, 2015, on NJ.com. The article discusses the implications of the proposed rule set forth two weeks ago by the Federal Aviation Administration, which, if passed, would make current temporary slot rule restrictions permanent.

“The rule would be a major step backward for our airports, passengers and the region, and we urge its rejection,” wrote Genova and Smitt. “The arbitrary caps limiting the number of flights restrict capacity without improving the rate of delays.”

The article explains that these slot restrictions not only “unfairly and uniquely target” the New York and New Jersey region, but as studies suggest, they have not served to ameliorate the chronic delay issues for which they were precisely imposed to mitigate.

“Instead of arbitrary restrictions, what our airports need is new 21st-century air traffic technology, expanded runways and taxiways, and new infrastructure…The constant delays are not surprising when you consider most passengers have better GPS technology in their pockets than most pilots do on their planes.”

Mr. Genova represents nationally recognized business and institutional clients in complex commercial, real estate and employment litigation. During Mr. Genova’s tenure as a Port Authority Commissioner, the agency instituted important airport improvement efforts, such as modernizing Terminals B and C at Newark Liberty International Airport. He is also a board member of Global Gateway Alliance, an airport advocacy coalition.
