    Partner Angelo J. Genova and Partner Peter R. Yarem Secure $13.9 million Judgment Against Developer

    A Bergen County Superior Court Judge recently awarded $13.9 million to a Genova Burns & Giantomasi client in a commercial dispute between its client and a Bergen County developer.  The judgment comes after years of litigation and pre-judgment appeals which reached the New Jersey Supreme Court before remand to the trial court.  Genova and Yarem represented the plaintiff, who has pursued payment from the developer stemming from the developer’s $46 million real estate purchase of a 16 acre property in Fort Lee, New Jersey in 2003.

    Partner Brian W.     Gemma M. Giantomasi Named General Counsel for Opportunity Project, Inc.

    Associate Gemma M. Giantomasi was named General Counsel for the Opportunity Project, Inc.  The Opportunity Project, a not-for-profit organization located in Milburn, New Jersey was founded in 1993 by people with brain injuries and their families. Their mission is to bridge the gap between medical services and offer vocational and social support systems to help their members rebuild and maintain satisfying lives. Membership is open to anyone over 18 with a brain injury regardless of their ability to pay.

     

    Ms. Giantomasi is a member of the Commercial Real Estate, Redevelopment & Environmental Law Practice Group and is based in the firm’s Newark, New Jersey office.

    The New York Times Reports on Acquittal of Manhattan Surrogate’s Court Judge; Laurence Laufer Quoted

    Last week, a jury acquitted a judge in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court and her former law partner of felony charges of filing false campaign reports.  The New York Times report on the verdict took note of Laurence D. Laufer’s role in advising the defense and quoted him on the implications of the case for New York campaign finance law.  Mr. Laufer is the director of the Genova Burns & Giantomasi Corporate Political Activity Law Practice Group.

    John C. Petrella to Speak at New Jersey Business and Industry Association Seminar on Complying with Complex State and Federal Labor and Employment Laws

    Partner John C.     New Jersey Law Journal Reports on Effects of Citizens United Decision on Corporate Political Advertising; Laurence Laufer Quoted

    The New Jersey Law Journal reported today that despite the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United case allowing corporations to spend more freely in federal elections, corporations have been slow to move forward with new political advertising. The article quotes partner Laurence Laufer, director of the Genova Burns Corporate Political Activity Law Practice Group, who stated that the ruling had not yet spurred new political expenditures by corporations.

Genova will be honored at the 17th Annual Newark Archbishop’s Business & Labor Recognition Reception.  The event, attended by business, labor and religious leaders, will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, New Jersey.  Proceeds from the event benefit the Archdiocese’s Catholic Youth Organization, a program dedicated to the improvement of the spiritual, emotional and social welfare of thousands of New Jersey’s young people of every race, religion and ethnic background.  Co-honoree will be David Jones, President of the New Jersey State Troopers Fraternal Association.

    Angelo J. Genova will testify before the Assembly Judiciary Committee on how the recent U.S. Supreme Court Citizens United decision, which removed campaign spending restrictions on corporations and unions, will impact New Jersey law.  The hearing will begin today at 10 a.m.

    Angelo J. Genova to Receive 2010 Annual Achievement Award from The Hall Institute of Public Policy - New Jersey

    Angelo J. Genova, a partner and co-founder of Genova Burns, will receive the 2010 Annual Achievement Award from the Hall Institute of Public Policy – New Jersey at the Annual Awards Gala on March 18, 2010. 

    The Hall Institute is a non-partisan, not-for-profit foundation established in 2005 to explore social, economic, educational and cultural issues in an effort to generate debate and discussion and develop solutions to the problems confronting the state and its residents.

    Mr. Genova appeared as a guest on the Hall Institute Forum in a 30-minute television interview where he discussed his career, public policy issues facing New Jersey, and his work with the Hall Institute.  Mr. Genova will be the second recipient of the Hall Institute’s Annual Achievement Award.
